DECATUR, Ala. (WHNT) — The Decatur Police Department said it is investigating a murder-suicide.
On Monday, around 8:48 p.m., DPD officers and Decatur Fire & Rescue responded to the 2900 block of Lynnwood Circle SW for a welfare check.
When the departments arrived, DFR went inside the house after a man was seen face down through a window. Once the department was inside, a man and woman were found unresponsive and “with apparent gunshot wounds.”
Morgan County Coroner Jeff Chunn responded to the scene and pronounced both the man and woman dead.
Detectives with the DPD’s Criminal Investigation Division were called to the scene and began an investigation. The man was identified as Matthew Ryan Martinez, 38, of Decatur, and the woman was identified as Sindy Michelle Masny, 56, of Decatur.
Through the course of the investigation, DPD said detectives determined the shooting to be a murder-suicide and that Martinez died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound after shooting Masny.
Based on the investigation, detectives determined the incident was isolated.
Martinez was previously arrested by Morgan County Sheriff’s officers on June 10 for second-degree domestic violence after court documents say he shot his mother in the butt. He was later released on a $75,000 bond.
