“The El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office extends its deepest heartfelt condolences to the families of those who were lost and all those who have been affected by this tragic event,” officials said in a statement posted to social media Tuesday.
Ten people were aboard the 27-foot Chris-Craft vessel when it overturned Saturday afternoon near D.L. Bliss State Park on the southwest edge of Lake Tahoe. A sudden and powerful storm whipped up high waves, according to the U.S. Coast Guard.
The intensity of the thunderstorm surprised even forecasters. They had predicted some rain, but nothing like the squall that lashed the southern part of the lake around 3 p.m., said meteorologist Matthew Chyba with the National Weather Service office in Reno, Nevada. Winds topped 35 mph and waves swelled more than 8 feet.
Two people were rescued immediately. Six bodies were recovered later Saturday, and a seventh body was found Sunday evening, according to the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office. Divers found the last victim Monday afternoon.
