Could the Boston Red Sox entertain the idea of trading their biggest offseason signing, Alex Bregman, this season?
Following the shocking trade of Rafael Devers, some in the media expect the Red Sox to shop Bregman ahead of the trade deadline.
FanSided’s Zachary Rotman recently urged the New York Mets to go after a monumental trade for the $120 million star. But would it make sense for both sides?
“Bregman would be a monumental upgrade for New York,” Rotman wrote. “Can you imagine adding him to a lineup that already consists of one of the most vaunted trios in the game in Juan Soto, Francisco Lindor, and Pete Alonso? I’m not sure how willing David Stearns would be to trade high-end prospect capital for a player who might walk months after being acquired, but with how this offense has performed this season, he should be willing to take a big swing.”
First of all, I don’t think the Red Sox should trade Bregman. They have him on their roster for a few more seasons, barring the superstar opting out after the season. Bregman is a franchise player in Boston, and that doesn’t seem to be changing for as long as he’s there.
But if the Red Sox look to trade him, the Mets could be the perfect landing spot.
New York is eager to win, and it has a roster that can do so. But it needs a third baseman and some pitching before it can call itself a true World Series favorite.
The Mets could deal away a few top prospects in order to land Bregman. They would also likely need to absorb his entire contract for this deal to be realistic.
