MLB Insider Tabs Red Sox As ‘Best Fit’ For $56 Million Cy Young Winner

The Boston Red Sox need to make a few moves ahead of the trade deadline.

Boston recently traded away its best player, Rafael Devers, but that shouldn’t be seen as the team waving the white flag. In fact, the Red Sox are still seemingly one or two key pieces away from contending in the American League.

If they can add an ace beside Garrett Crochet, the Red Sox could be a threat in the AL.

ESPN’s Kiley McDaniel and Jeff Passan recently listed the Red Sox as one of the “best fits” in a trade for Miami Marlins ace Sandy Alcántara.

“Alcantara was arguably the best pitcher in baseball in 2022, winning the NL Cy Young unanimously. He was more solid than spectacular in 2023 and missed 2024 with Tommy John surgery,” They wrote. “He has been tinkering this season to try to get his pitch mix and locations right in hopes of regaining his former glory.

“It is starting to look as though he is turning the corner to become a midrotation starter (or better?) once again as he has posted a 2.74 ERA in four June outings. The Marlins could hold on to him until the winter, when teams like Baltimore would be more inclined to acquire him and the final two years of his contract.”

Alcántara has a few more years of team control on his contract. This makes him a safer option to go after than some of the other names on the trade block.

The Marlins’ righty is also supremely talented and affordable.

The Red Sox would need to cut ties with a few top prospects in order to land the righty, but the ability to add another ace besides Crochet would be worth whatever the prospect return would need to be.

This is the kind of trade that closes some of the gap between the Red Sox and the New York Yankees.
