For several months, Prince Harry has been expressing a desire for reconciliation. Forgiving his brother, his father, his stepmother and even the British press was not out of the question. But one sticking point remained: his safety on British soil, a subject at the heart of his recent disputes with “certain” members of the royal family.
After a whirlwind visit to London last month without a stopover at Buckingham Palace, the Duke of Sussex now seems ready to go one step further. He has reportedly agreed to invite his father, King Charles III, and brother, Prince William, to the next Invictus Games, which will be held in Birmingham in 2027.
According to a source quoted by the Mail on Sunday, Harry will be sending out invitations out as early as this summer: “The royals have always been hugely supportive of Invictus and proud of what Harry has achieved in that arena. This is one olive branch from him that might be reciprocated.”
If the message arrives in time for royal staff to adjust agendas, it remains unlikely that the King’s official schedule will be set two years in advance. However, a coincidence in the calendar could play in favor of this symbolic moment: the closing ceremony of the Invictus Games, scheduled for July 17, 2027, would coincide with Queen Camilla’s 80th birthday. An opportunity, perhaps, to celebrate the event as a family, reunited at last.
In an interview with the BBC in early May, after losing his appeal for police protection, Prince Harry seemed to have changed his tune: “There’s no point continuing to fight anymore. Life is precious. I don’t know how much longer my father has,” he said, referring to King Charles III’s battle with cancer. The ball is now in the royal family’s court. Will they accept this extended hand? Are they ready to open a new—and unprecedented—chapter in their history?
