HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) — The University of Alabama in Huntsville has announced that Associate Athletic Director for Marketing and Communications Sam Baldwin has died.
The university said on Monday that Baldwin unexpectedly died over the weekend.
Baldwin first joined the UAH Athletic Communication office during the 2014-2015 school year and was promoted to Associate Athletic Director for Marketing and Communications.
During that time with the Chargers, UAH said Baldwin helped oversee growth in their social media presence, along with improvements to the video broadcasts for all of the university’s teams.
UAH Athletic Director Dr. Cade Smith said the loss is devastating for the university and those who knew Baldwin.
“This is devastating for all of us who loved Sam,” Smith said. “Sam was a great employee who loved the Chargers. Sam made us better. Most importantly, he was good friend. He will be missed and he has left a void that will be hard to fill. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends.”
News 19 Sports Director Olivia Whitmire, who often worked with Baldwin, said he was great to work with and a good friend.
“Like Cade said, this is truly devastating news,” Whitmire said. “Sam’s official title was Associate Athletic Director for Marketing and Communications, but we just called him the SID for sports information director. The SIDs of the world do whatever they can to make our jobs easier as sports reporters, and Sam did a phenomenal job. No ask was too much for him, and he always wanted the best coverage for all of UAH’s teams. More importantly than anything he did professionally, Sam was a great person and friend, and I know I can speak for many when I say we’re going to miss him so much.”
