Like his heroine, Emily In Paris creator/executive producer Darren Star is currently in Paris, working on the upcoming fifth season of his hit Netflix comedy series starring Lily Collins.

During an interview about the Netflix success of his previous series, Younger, Star provided an update on Emily In Paris.

“I think we’ve got a really terrific season coming up,” he said. “We filmed in Rome for the first four weeks, and that was an exciting experience to be there. Now we’re back in Paris, Emily is definitely back in Paris.”

Netflix announced in April that production on Season 5 would start in May — first in Rome and then in Paris — for a 2025 premiere. The streamer at the time also confirmed returning cast for the new installment, which includes Season 4 series regulars Collins (Emily Cooper), Philippine Leroy-Beaulieu (Sylvie Grateau), Ashley Park (Mindy Chen), Lucas Bravo (Gabriel), Samuel Arnold (Julien), Bruno Gouery (Luc) and William Abadie (Antoine Lambert) as well as Lucien Laviscount as Emily’s former boyfriend Alfie, who, as Deadline reported exclusively in January, will be back full-time next season, and Eugenio Franceschini (Marcello) who was introduced in Season 4 as new love interest for Emily. (Fellow new Season 4 addition Thalia Besson as Genevieve also is believed to be back.)

Not returning is Camille Razat, who had been a series regular for the first four seasons as Camille, Emily’s onetime friend and main rival for Gabriel’s heart.

“I think her story kind of had a natural finish,” Star said about Razat’s departure.

Late in Season 4, Camille packed up and left Paris after one last go at a relationship with Gabriel (Bravo) under false pretenses involving a fake pregnancy.

Camille may be out of the picture but don’t expect Emily’s love life to get easier in Season 5 after the Season 4 finale saw her happy with Marcello but old flame Gabriel ready to fight for her.

“Her love life is always complicated,” Star said. “We have Marcello, Lucas Bravo is going to be back this season, so we have some interesting, surprising developments in terms of her love life.”

Bravo raised questions about his return for Season 5 last fall, saying that he felt “frustrated” and that playing Gabriel was “not fun anymore” as the character was “being slowly turned into guacamole.”

Was it hard to get Bravo back or was it just a misunderstanding?

“I think the latter, just a misunderstanding,” Star said. “I think he was never intending not to come back.”

As for Laviscount’s return as a series regular after only appearing in a handful of episodes in Season 4, “Lucien is basically in every episode this season,” Star said. “He’s terrific, and I’m really happy to see him back this year in a more significant way.”

‘Climbing In Heels’ & ‘Uncorked’

Under his overall deal at Universal Television, Star sold two high-profile projects earlier this year, both with big script-to-series commitments. Climbing in Heels, an hourlong adaptation of Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas’ upcoming novel which he is co-writing with her, is set up at Peacock. Uncorked, a half-hour, single-camera dramedy which Star is co-writing with New Amsterdam creator David Schulner, is at Netflix.

“I’m excited about both of those,” Star said.

He lifted the veil just a bit over Uncorked whose premise had been kept under wraps beyond the fact that it is set in Napa Valley and has a female lead.

“It’s about a brilliant female winemaker who gets a big second chance in life,” Star said. “So it’s kind of like the wine world, but definitely coming in from a female point of view of a very complicated character.”

Climbing In Heels follows the rise of five ambitious secretaries navigating the glitzy world of 1980s Hollywood while offering a glimpse into the boys-will-be-boys club and the women who wanted a seat at a table where they were expected to serve.

There is no talent attached yet.

“I really like to write it and then cast it but I do feel like it has so many wonderful roles for a number of actresses,” Star said. “There’re a bunch of roles that are going to be really strong.”
