There was a point in time when New York Mets infielder Brett Baty seemed to be one of the future stars of the game. But he hasn’t panned out to this point.
To make matters worse, Baty has been horrendous in June, posting a slash line of .115/.190/.231 on the month. These struggles aren’t new for the young infielder either, as he’s never really gotten going at the big league level.
Rising Apple‘s Noah Wright recently shared some serious concerns for Baty, considering he’s gotten off to such a horrendous start to June.
“However, since the calendar turned over to June, Baty has looked next to lost at the dish. He only has six hits over 58 plate appearances. He’s gone down on strikes 16 times with only five walks,” Wright wrote. “His OPS heading into this month was .767, but has now plummeted to just .659. Baty’s win percentage added (WPA) prior to the Mets breaking their recent losing streak amounted to a whopping -0.55, which was the sixth lowest of any third baseman this month with at least 50 plate appearances.
“Baty is still hitting the ball hard, but that’s about all the positives you can say about his game right now. Given how good he looked from mid-April through the end of May, it’s disheartening to see him fall into this brutal slump and look even worse than he did prior to 2025. It’s definitely concerning, given his lack of track record and the fact that the Mets need help in the infield right now.”
If a top prospect comes up for their rookie season and struggles, it’s no big deal. If they struggle during their second year in the league, it’s concerning, but not the end of the world.
For Baty, it’s been four years of struggles now. He debuted in 2022 but didn’t stick in the big leagues before putting together rough campaigns in 2023 and 2024. Now, with another rough season on the horizon, it’s very easy to be concerned about the 25-year-old infielder.
At this point, Baty has opened a hole in the Mets’ infield depth. He might need a change of scenery in the near future because it doesn’t look like the former top prospect is going to find too much success in Queens with the Mets.
