A seventh person was confirmed to have died and one person remained missing on Monday, two days after a boat capsized on Lake Tahoe in California, the officials said.

Two other people were rescued and taken to a hospital after the 27-foot-long boat overturned near D.L. Bliss State Park, sending 10 people into the water around 3 p.m. local time on Saturday, the U.S. Coast Guard said on Sunday.

A large wave appeared to have caused the boat, a gold Chris-Craft, to overturn, the Coast Guard said. There were winds of up to 35 miles per hour and waves of six to eight feet at the time.

The Coast Guard said on Sunday morning that six people had died and that two people were missing. On Monday, the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office said on social media that the death toll had risen to seven after one of the missing passengers was found dead on Sunday night.

The identities of the victims would not be released until their families had been notified, the Sheriff’s Office said.

The authorities were still searching for the missing person on Monday, the Sheriff’s Office said. The Coast Guard said it suspended its search on Sunday morning after searching more than 390 square miles for 12 combined hours with partner agencies.

The boat overturned on the southwestern side of Lake Tahoe, which is the largest alpine lake in North America and is a major tourism destination that straddles California’s border with Nevada.

The lake, which has a distinctive blue tint and is surrounded by mountains, has a surface area of 191 square miles and an average depth of 1,000 feet, according to the University of California, Davis.

There were several reports of boats in distress on the lake on Saturday afternoon after powerful winds suddenly created high waves, SouthTahoeNOW.com, a local news site, reported.

A seasonal lifeguard and a ranger spotted people in the water from the capsized boat and were able to get two of them onto nearby rocks and start performing CPR as help arrived, the site reported.
