Donald Trump Loses Approval Rating Gains in ‘Bad’ Week—Nate Silver

Recent polls will have made for unhappy reading for President Donald Trump, and a new survey suggests that his approval ratings have slipped again.

Trump had seen brief improvement earlier this month after a string of negative ratings, but that brief gain has been wiped out in polls conducted over the past two weeks.

A new analysis by pollster Nate Silver on his Silver Bulletin website calculates Trump’s net approval languishing in negative numbers, standing at -6.1.

Newsweek has reached out by email to the White House seeking comment.

Why It Matters

Americans are facing a cost-of-living crisis, with inflation pushing prices up for consumers, soaring layoffs for those in retail jobs, and home ownership now out of reach for many. Many Trump critics have slammed his push for steep tariffs and the policies outlined in his “big, beautiful bill,” while his anti-immigration raids have proved to be divisive, sparking protests across the country.

This weekend, Trump waded into the Israel-Iran conflict by authorizing a U.S. strike on Iran’s nuclear facilities, with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian saying the U.S. “must receive a response for their aggression.” Trump must now work to keep his MAGA supporters behind him, given his decision to attack Iran despite his campaign promise that the U.S. would not become involved in any more foreign wars.

What To Know

Trump had started to make up lost ground on his approval rating, Silver said on Monday in an article written with Eli McKown-Dawson, but things turned south after a bad week for the president.

“Prior to last week, Trump’s approval rating had been on an upswing since a hitting a low point on April 29th,” according to the article. “His net approval in the Silver Bulletin average rose from -9.7 on that date to -3.6 on June 10. But Trump has lost much of those gains over the past two weeks.

“As of today, his net approval rating in our average is -6.1. And the share of Americans who strongly approve of the job Trump is doing has fallen by about 3 percentage points since the 10th.”

That number, -6.1, was worked out by the Silver Bulletin using various polls to calculate the average.

Within the past week, a number of other surveys have suggested Trump’s political capital is struggling.

Less than six months into his second term, Trump’s approval rating is underwater in 15 states that he won in the November election, according to analysis by The Economist, while a poll by RealClearPolitics suggests his approval rating has been backsliding, and even a Republican pollster found that there were fewer respondents backing the president.

What People Are Saying

Pollsters Nate Silver and Eli McKown: “On immigration—by far his best issue—Trump’s net approval rating is down to -3.8. That’s the lowest it’s been since the start of his second term: Trump’s net immigration approval was +4.0 just two weeks ago. His approval on handling inflation and the cost of living has also fallen by nearly 6 points in the same period.”

President Donald Trump, on Sunday on Truth Social: “Great unity in the Republican Party, perhaps unity like we have never seen before. Now let’s get the Great, Big, Beautiful Bill done. Our Country is doing GREAT. MAGA! [Make America Great Again.]”
