MLB Writer Suggests $120 Million Red Sox Superstar Could Be Traded

The Boston Red Sox shocked the baseball world earlier this month when they made the decision to trade superstar Rafael Devers to the San Francisco Giants.

Now, the Red Sox could look to swing even more trades before the trade deadline. In fact, some around baseball expect Boston to continue selling despite being in the postseason hunt.

MLB.com’s Thomas Harrigan recently suggested the Red Sox could look to trade offseason signing Alex Bregman in another blockbuster deal this season.

“Barring a collapse over the next five weeks, the Red Sox could opt to buy, with a chance to repurpose some of the money they saved in the Devers trade. Of course, it’s not a given that Boston will be able to sustain this surge,” Harrigan wrote. “After all, the team just traded its best hitter and still has a suspect rotation behind ace Garrett Crochet.

“We may very well see the Red Sox reverse course again, in which case, chief baseball officer Craig Breslow could be tempted to shop Bregman to avoid potentially losing him for nothing in free agency. The third baseman signed a three-year, $120 million deal with Boston last offseason but can opt out at the end of 2025. Due back soon from a right quad strain, Bregman is hitting .299 with 11 homers and a .938 OPS this season.”

This idea doesn’t make much sense at all.

The decision to trade Devers was a move likely made to cut ties with a player who was refusing to do what was best for the team. It wasn’t a move that should send the Red Sox toward a huge rebuild.

With the money freed up from trading Devers, the Red Sox shouldn’t need to worry about Bregman leaving in free agency at the end of the season. Boston would be able to re-sign him if he opts out of his deal.

The veteran infielder has consistently been one of the best players in Boston when healthy this season. If the team opted to trade him after dealing away Devers, Fenway Park may experience some low-level rioting from the dedicated Boston fanbase.
