HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) — A fire destroyed the home of a disabled man and everything inside.

“This is where we raised the kids right here at home for 51 years,” said homeowner Robert Lewis.

Lewis said that through the charred remains, the only thing that he was left with were the pajamas that he wore on the night that a fire raged through his home. It happened on Thursday, May 29, around midnight.

Lewis said if it wasn’t for the actions of his son, who was outside at the time, this story may have had a different ending.

“My son had to pull me out of the bed, and I got my dad out of the bed and out of the house and brought him outside, and then we called the fire department and the police, and they came out here,” Lewis explained.

Lewis said that three minutes later, the Huntsville Fire and Rescue arrived, but by that time, it was too late.

“We were living in this house for 51 years, and we lost everything that we had and everything that we owned.”

Lewis is the sole caregiver for his 93-year-old father.

His dad has been disabled, and he needed an oxygen tank and a walking cane to get around the house.

With no homeowner’s insurance and living on social security, the fire left them both homeless.

Lewis says that now he can only hope that someone hears his prayers so that he can continue to care for his father.

“I took care of him in the house, made sure he had everything that he needed but now that stuff is gone,” said Lewis. “I just hope that it’s gets better, and I hope we get it back together.”

A fundraiser has been set up to help Lewis and his father recover.
