Tooreen | $1.1 million (€975,000)

A six-bedroom hillside house built over a waterfall in County Cork

This rustic six-bedroom, four-bath house sits over a natural waterfall near the tourist village of Glengarriff in County Cork, in southwest Ireland. Situated in a hamlet called Tooreen, the unusual house has served for years as the anchor to a popular sculpture park in the surrounding woodlands.

Inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright’s Fallingwater house in Mill Run, Pa., the three-story house has a giant staircase in a central atrium surrounded by large windows to capture the sounds of the flowing stream beneath it.

Glengarriff has about 800 residents and offers amenities including markets, hotels, pubs and restaurants. Its population expands during the summer tourist season. Activities include kayaking, golf, fishing and cycling, and there are boat trips to Garnish Island, which has formal gardens popular with visitors. Nearby is the Glengarriff Woods Nature Reserve, with hiking trails through about 740 acres of sessile oak woodlands in the shadow of the Caha Mountains.

The city of Cork, with about 228,000 residents, is 60 miles east of the property, as is Cork Airport, which offers regular flights across Britain and continental Europe, and some to North America.

Size: 5,274 square feet

Price per square foot: $214

Indoors: The front door opens to a large atrium with an imposing spiral staircase. There are five large rooms around the atrium, three with internal windows with atrium views. There are also two bathrooms and utility rooms on the first floor.

The spiral staircase ascends to the second-floor landing, leading to a spacious kitchen, a combined dining/living room with a fireplace, and a large bathroom. Off the dining/living room is another sitting room with access to a terrace. A hallway leads to two more rooms that could be used as bedrooms.

Two staircases climb to an attic level with a landing overlooking the entire atrium. There is a large open space, three bedrooms, a bathroom and a storage room. The house has many south-facing windows to bring in plenty of sunlight.

Outdoor space: The property sits on 2.5 acres and includes a separate single-story studio space of about 645 square feet. The rear of the house has a rock garden and a terraced kitchen garden. The stream with the waterfall meanders through the woodlands, which are laced with paths and interspersed with specimen trees and shrubs.

Costs: Annual property taxes are €1,138 ($1,315). Stamp duty, which is 1 percent for residential properties valued up to €1 million, would be €9,750 ($11,250).

The Skibbereen Heritage Center has a Great Famine Commemoration Exhibition, while the West Cork Arts Centre is a hub for artists in the area. Other activities in Skibbereen include golf, fishing, hiking, boating and scuba diving.

Cobh | $1.1 million (€975,000)

A four-bedroom Victorian rowhouse with harbor views in Cobh

This four-bedroom, three-bath Victorian mid-terrace house has views of Cork Harbour in the town of Cobh.

The three-story home is one in a row of 13 attached 19th-century houses. Collectively called the Crescent, they are perched on a hill with views of Cobh town, located on an island in the city of Cork’s harbor. Besides the harbor, the rowhouses have views of the picturesque St. Colman’s Cathedral, among the tallest cathedrals in Ireland.

With a population of about 14,000, Cobh is a maritime town and major emigration port known for being the Titanic’s last port of call in 1912. Among its attractions are the Titanic Experience Cobh and the Cobh Heritage Center. The town also has a ferry to Spike Island, the nearby home of a former military fortress and prison. On another island, reached via train, is the 100-acre Fota Wildlife Park, which houses several animal species in danger of extinction.

The city of Cork is about 13 miles northwest of Cobh, and can be reached by a 25-minute train ride. Cork Airport is about 30 minutes away.

Size: 2,500 square feet

Price per square foot: $450

Indoors: The Italianate-style house has undergone renovations since 2013, but has many original features including marble fireplaces, cornicing, parquet wood floors and the staircase. The interior shutters, doors, skirtings and architraves were replaced mostly with replicas.

The front door opens to a wainscoted entrance hall on the second floor with a staircase. Beyond is the living room, which has a hand-painted limestone fireplace and a deep bay window with views of Cork Harbour. The dining room also has a fireplace and accesses the kitchen through an archway. The kitchen features quartz countertops and poplar wood cabinetry painted pale moss green.

The third-floor landing has skylights and leads to three bedrooms (two with fireplaces) and a bathroom.

The first floor has the fourth bedroom, which has a bathtub in front of a deep bay window and a separate en suite bath. There are also two reception rooms on this level, one with a fireplace and a Palladio door accessing the patio.

Outdoor space: The house has a private south-facing garden with a limestone patio and harbor views. The garden exits through a residents-only gated walkway down to Cobh town.

Costs: Annual property taxes are €1,159 ($1,340); 1 percent stamp duty would be €9,750 ($11,250).
