Disney+ is set to adapt popular Korean webtoon “The Remarried Empress” into a live-action series.
The romantic fantasy will star Shin Mina (Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha), Ju Jihoon (Light Shop), Lee Jongsuk (Big Mouth) and Lee Seyoung (The Red Sleeve).
The webtoon has received over 2.6 billion views so far, with the story following empress Navier, whose husband shocks her one day when he returns home with his mistress and demands a divorce. Unwilling to let the Emperor ruin her life, Navier grants his request but in return, asks to marry a rival prince of theWestern Kingdom, igniting a tale of political intrigue, romance, and a fight to reclaim her stolen power.
Shin will star as Empress Navier, while Ju will portray Emperor Sovieshu of the Eastern Empire.
Lee Jongsuk will play the role of Heinrey, the Crown Prince of the Western Kingdom who harbors a hidden secret. Lee Seyoung stars as Rashta, the former runaway slave-turned-concubine of Sovieshu who sets her sights on the empress’ throne.
The Remarried Empress will be adapted for streaming by Yeoh Geena and Hyun Choongyeol (The Uncanny Counter).
Cho Suwon, who helmed Still 17 and popular 2014 series Pinocchio, will direct The Remarried Empress.
The Remarried Empress joins the pipeline of Korean original titles on Disney+, which also includes recent projects like A Shop For Killers, criminal mystery Nine Puzzles, Low Life and international conspiracy Tempest.
