PHOENIX — A man was arrested after he allegedly shot at a police helicopter on Friday in Yuma, authorities said.

Mubarak Prince, 51, from Dateland, Arizona was booked into the Yuma County Detention Center on three counts of first-degree attempted murder, according to the Yuma County Sheriff’s Office (YCSO).

Details on shooting involving police helicopter

This incident occurred during routine aerial patrols in the 1600 block of E. Santa Calle Clara, authorities said. Deputies inside heard something hitting the YCSO aircraft.

Deputies were flying near a remote residential property when a deputy reportedly saw a someone standing outside pointing at the helicopter. Deputies then heard another impact to the helicopter and saw debris inside the cabin due to damage.

The helicopter landed safely back at the hangar where crews found a projectile puncture, which confirmed that the aircraft had been shot with a firearm.

The YCSO’s Criminal Investigations Bureau took over the investigation and identified Prince as a suspect.

The YCSO Special Response Team served a search warrant at Prince’s property. Several other law enforcement agencies participated, including the Yuma Police Department Special Enforcement Team, U.S. Border Patrol and the Cocopah Police Department.

No injuries were reported from this incident.

Anyone with information pertaining to the case is asked to contact the YCSO as 928-783-4427 or 928-782-7463 to remain anonymous. Anonymous tips can also be submitted at the YCSO’s website.
