The number of Republicans who “strongly” approve of President Donald Trump has declined in recent months, according to a new poll.

Republicans were 5 percentage points less likely to say that they strongly approve of the president compared to April, according to the latest poll from NBC News Decision Desk and SurveyMonkey.

Why It Matters

Several polls have found his overall approval rating remains stuck in negative territory.

A shift in Trump’s approval rating among Republicans could influence his support from Republican lawmakers, impact his ability to push through his agenda and shape the political landscape ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.

What To Know

The NBC poll found 55 percent of adults said they disapprove of the job Trump is doing, while 45 percent approve—unchanged from the survey conducted in April.

Much of the shift from Republicans who went from saying they “strongly approve” of Trump to “somewhat approve” since April came from those Trump’s base of supporters who said they identify with his Make America Great Again movement, according to NBC News’ report.

The survey also found that fewer MAGA supporters chose “thrilled” when asked to describe how they feel about the actions taken by the Trump administration so far than in April.

Just over a third (37 percent) said they were thrilled about the actions taken by the administration so far in the term—down from 46 percent in April. The latest poll showed 51 percent of Democrats said they were “furious” at the administration’s actions. Meanwhile, 65 percent of independents disapproved of the president’s performance.

The latest poll was conducted online between May 30 and June 10 among a national sample of 19,410 adults. It had an estimated margin of error of plus or minus 2.1 percentage points.

What People Are Saying

NBC News Chief Data Analyst Steve Kornacki said on Meet the Press on Sunday that the poll found there is “much more negative energy on the Democratic side than there is positive on the Republican side. And the key here is looking forward, the elections later this year, the midterms. Is there an imbalance between the parties there? We’ve seen it in special elections. This is something, I think, to keep an eye on, too.”

What’s Next

Trump’s approval rating is likely to fluctuate as the impact of his policies continues to be felt, as well as how demonstrations against U.S. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement actions unfold in Los Angeles and in other major cities.
