Rory McIlroy has had quite a couple of months. In April, he became the sixth man ever to complete the career grand slam, winning the 2025 Masters. He joined Gene Sarazen, Ben Hogan, Gary Players, Jack Nicklaus, and Tiger Woods.
McIlroy was playing so phenomenally at that point, many wondered how many majors he would go on to win.
Here we are two months later and the narrative has changed drastically.
After his driver was deemed nonconforming by the USGA at the PGA Championship, McIlroy opted not to speak to the media after each round.
The same occurred the following week, as McIlroy posted the worst 36-hole finish of his PGA Tour career. He, understandably, did not speak last week.
Following his third round of the U.S. Open, he finally did address the media. He was rather blunt when asked about not speaking with the media.
“It’s more a frustration with you guys,” McIlroy said. “I feel like I’ve earned the right to do whatever I want to do,” he added shortly after.
Paul McGinley, the winning 2014 Ryder Cup captain for Europe, was not a fan of what McIlroy had to say.
“I didn’t enjoy them. I don’t like to see that, Rory McIlroy is better than that. Either not talking to the media or giving a press conference like that doesn’t serve him fairly or rightly for the person that he is,” McGinley said at the U.S. Open on Live From.
“He looks fed up to me. He looks like he’s had enough of everything. Whether it was the emotional release of everything that’s gone on in his career, I don’t know, but he’s not himself.”
McGinley then hinted at maybe something off the course being in play.
“I’m disappointed for Rory that it’s come to that. Something is eating at him. He has not let us know what that is, but there’s something not right.”
McIlroy admitted after his final round Sunday that he ‘climbed his Everest’ when he won the Masters. He went on to detail his mental struggles since that time, and how difficult it has been for him to remain focused.
