‘No Kings’ protests begin in Los Angeles with…yoga?

Amid civil unrest and protests against federal immigration raids in Los Angeles, demonstrators are gearing up for separate “No Kings” protests, some in a rather peaceful way.

Multiple nationwide “No Kings” demonstrations are planned for Saturday, which is Flag Day and President Donald Trump’s birthday. Saturday is also when the Trump administration will stage a massive military parade in Washington, D.C.

Locally, there are many demonstrations planned, including in downtown Los Angeles, which has been the site of destructive protests over ICE raids that have led to hundreds of people being arrested on various charges and a curfew being instituted.

The “No Kings” protest in DTLA, however, seemed to start off with tranquility as two people were seen doing yoga on the steps of Los Angeles City Hall around 6:30 a.m. Saturday. Near the man and woman doing yoga was a sign with the “No Kings” insignia.

The march through downtown starts on Spring Street around 10:30 a.m. Saturday, and at least a dozen “No Kings” demonstrations are planned throughout the day. Click here to view a list of them.

Organizers are calling “No Kings” a “nationwide day of defiance” to show the world “what democracy really looks like.”

“From city blocks to small towns, from courthouse steps to community parks, we’re taking action to reject authoritarianism — and show the world what democracy really looks like,” the “No Kings” website reads. “The flag doesn’t belong to President Trump. It belongs to us. We’re not watching history happen. We’re making it.”

A “No Kings” demonstration near Minneapolis was canceled after two politicians and their spouses were shot in a “politically motivated assassination” on Saturday morning.
