It’s too early to take risks for the New York Giants. While they want to see their star wide receiver in action as soon as possible, Malik Nabers’ offseason setback has kept him out of the mix throughout the team’s set of spring sessions.

Last week, Giants receivers got to work with the first-year New Yorker, Russell Wilson. As several players managed to settle in and get comfortable with the veteran, a toe injury prevented Nabers from building with his new quarterback.

The trend continued this week, leading to more questions for Giants head coach, Brian Daboll. Is everything good on the Nabers front right now? According to the head coach, there isn’t anything to worry about.

“He’ll be doing similar things that he’s done the last couple times he’s been out,” Daboll told reporters this week as the Giants continued their offseason workouts. “He did a little bit of walkthrough here, but he’s progressing. He’ll be OK.”

Last season, Nabers entered the Giants’ organization as their sixth-overall pick out of LSU. He was coming off a 13-game run at LSU, where he produced 1,569 yards and 14 touchdowns off 89 catches.

The Giants hoped that the presence of Nabers would uplift their former franchise passer, Daniel Jones. While Jones led all Giants quarterbacks in production last season, it was clear the organization was losing faith. After 10 games, Jones was sidelined, which led to an eventual release for the former first-rounder.

Nabers was left catching passes from several quarterbacks throughout his rookie season. It wasn’t a great situation for a young wideout, learning the ins and outs of the NFL, but he adjusted just right. In 15 games, Nabers was targeted 170 times. He caught 109 passes for 1,204 yards. As a rookie, he produced seven touchdowns on the year.

Based on what he put on display in year one, Nabers is primed for a major second season in the NFL. The Giants invested in a win-now move at quarterback by acquiring Russell Wilson via free agency. Wilson has struggled to mirror his Seattle Seahawks days since leaving for the Denver Broncos, but another fresh start with a young star like Nabers could be just what the veteran QB needs.

Last year, Wilson threw for 2,482 yards and 16 touchdowns in 11 games for the Pittsburgh Steelers. Soon, the Giants could see the Wilson-Nabers combo in action. For the time being, Daboll’s team is understandably taking it slow with the 21-year-old’s recovery.
