PHOENIX — Four people were charged in connection to the shooting of a Tucson police officer in April, according to a Thursday news release.

Daniel Cardenas, 18, was charged with use of a firearm. Jaquvon Terell Poe, 20, and Hassan Omar Kassim, 19, were charged with aiding and abetting the crime, while Alexandra Brooke Wisdom, 19, was charged with accessory after the fact in the crime according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Arizona.

Cardenas, Kassim and Poe were also charged with conspiracy to commit the crime.

Why were four people charged in Tucson shooting case?

Authorities said on April 20, a Tucson officer was working as a member of the Operations Division West Community Response Team near Stone Avenue and Fort Lowell when he saw a vehicle driving at high speed. Kassim was later identified as the driver of the vehicle.

As the officer followed the vehicle, Kassim made a turn and Cardenas then leaned out of the car from the backseat window and shot at the officer’s vehicle. Poe was also in the vehicle during the incident.

The vehicle then made a U-turn and Cardenas fired more shots at the officer’s vehicle. A patrol officer then attempted to pull over the vehicle but lost it after a pursuit.

Upon investigation, police learned that Wisdom later drove the vehicle to abandon it and removed items from the vehicle, some of which were later found in her apartment.

The officer was not injured during the incident.

“Any attack on law enforcement is an attack on the rule of law,” U.S. attorney Timothy Courchaine said in the release. “Our office is proud to support Tucson Police officers as they put their lives on the line to keep their communities safe.”

Tucson Police and the FBI Phoenix’s division Tucson office handled the investigation, while Assistant U.S. Attorney Adam D. Rossi, District of Arizona, Tucson, will handle the prosecution.
