At least four people are dead and three are missing in San Antonio, Texas, after floodwaters swept 13 vehicles away early Thursday morning.

Vehicles were seen in photos from the scene flipped upside down, almost entirely submerged in the water.

San Antonio Police Department Chief William McManus told reporters that two male and two female bodies were recovered from the floodwaters at various locations, including Beitel Creek.

The flooding began around 5 a.m. near the intersection of Northeast Loop 410 and Perrin Beitel.

The San Antonio Fire Department told NBC affiliate WOAI they recovered 10 people from the vehicles. Four individuals were transported to local hospitals, two left the scene and four were found deceased.

People were rescued from both inside the vehicles and in the floodwaters, McManus said.

The Game Wardens and Sam Antonio police’s homicide unit are assisting the fire department’s ongoing rescue efforts.

“These are low water crossings that the depth of the water and the speed at which it’s traveling are very, very hard to gauge,” McManus said. “If you venture into it when the water is deep, and the water’s moving real fast, you’re taking your life into your own hands.”

McManus asked anyone who left the scene and did not speak to authorities to contact the Traffic Investigation Division and confirm their safety.

San Antonio, Universal City and Converse are under flash flood warning until 2:45 p.m. EST Thursday, according to the National Weather Service.
