As the Washington Commanders look to get the business side of the game with multiple players squared away this offseason, the team reportedly agreed to terms on a contract extension with the veteran safety, Jeremy Reaves.

Shortly after it was reported that Reaves has signed on for at least one more season with the Commanders, Washington head coach Dan Quinn addressed the re-signing, praising what Reaves brings to the table in all areas on and off the field.

“It honestly makes me smile,” Quinn told reporters, regarding Reaves’ extension.

“This is a true Commander—one of our heavy hitters—an absolute all-around BMF in every way. It’s no surprise he was elected one of the captains when the postseason began. He affects all sides of the ball, and that’s kind of the best part about our team. It’s not like I’m just over here with our defense or just on the special teams; we’re one team. And I love that. Jeremy represents that about as strongly as anybody could. The performance side—man, you feel it. The speed, the tackling, and the toughness. We really value what he brings to us on and off the field. That came out, and that’s a really cool moment for us.”

Since joining Washington’s organization, Reaves has developed into a special teams star. The 28-year-old joined the Commanders after a short-lived stint with their NFC East rival, the Philadelphia Eagles.

Coming out of South Alabama, Reaves went undrafted in the 2018 NFL Draft. He joined the Eagles for training camp that summer, but wasn’t able to make the final cuts, despite being considered a standout throughout training camp and the preseason.

Reaves was waived by the Eagles, but eventually landed on Washington’s roster. It took a couple of months before Reaves was promoted to the main roster. Early on, Reaves’s stint as a Commander was rocky, as he was waived by the team in 2019. However, he was promoted from the practice squad and appeared in nine games throughout his sophomore season.

Since then, Reaves has been a steady contributor for the Commanders, mostly on special teams. Eventually, Reaves excelled to the point where he was named a Pro Bowler for the first and only time in his career in 2022. He was also voted First-Team All-Pro in the same season.

Over 64 career games, Reaves has racked up 128 tackles, with two for a loss.

Reaves is currently playing on a two-year deal. Wednesday’s decision for Washington secures Reaves’ presence for the 2026 NFL season as well.
