It’s always 2023 somewhere. If you’ll recall, in the run-up to the hit romantic comedy Anyone But You, co-stars Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell were rumored to be secretly in love, rumors that they almost definitely started themselves to help sell the movie, though in fairness, the chemistry was real and they do seem to be close friends. At the time, the Top Gun: Maverick star had recently split from his girlfriend, model Gigi Paris, and the Euphoria actor was still engaged to Jonathan Davino.
Now, Paris is sharing her side of the story. To hear her tell it, the breakup and the movie promo weren’t connected, exactly, but could’ve been handled with more tact, and she’s not exactly sure that nothing went down between Powell and Sweeney.
“Where are you when you just need to stand up and say, ‘No, I would never cheat on my girlfriend. I wouldn’t do that.’ That’s all that needed to be said. And that wasn’t said … Never once,” Paris said on the June 10 episode of the Too Much podcast hosted by Emma Klipstein, per People.
“[The rumors were] serving them for their PR. Later on, it turned out that it was all, I don’t know if there was a relationship there or not, but then they came out to say it was all a PR scheme at the expense of our relationship. Like, it was just crazy,” she continued, adding, “I honestly hoped that they’d end up together, because I was like, at least it would make it worth it for me, you know? I hope they are in love or whatnot.”
Saying she didn’t know whether or not she’d technically been cheated on, Paris also gave her version of the breakup. She was on her way to Australia for work (where Anyone But You was also filming) when she got a call from Glen Powell essentially dis-inviting her from visiting the set.
“And that’s when I hung up. And I was like, this motherfucker is done to me,” she said on the podcast. “That phone call really is what broke me…I thought we had hope, like, maybe when I got there that, like, things would maybe get better. But once I got that phone call, I just knew it was done. I had lost whoever that person was that I loved.”
“I went anyways just to look him in the eye and break up with him…it was the hardest thing I’d ever had to do…But then I was stuck there for two weeks doing my jobs. And there was a rule, like, I was not allowed near set. I was not allowed anywhere near production. It was very bizarre,” she added.
