Culottes got your tongue? The return of the trend may have left many a millennial speechless, but as Monica Barbaro proved on Monday, June 9, all that handwringing over the resurgence of culottes—also known as gaucho pants to a certain subset of 30-somethings who shopped at Limited Too in 2005 (hi, hello)—is unnecessary.
The actor was photographed doing press in New York City this week wearing a white culotte suit (is that a thing?) which I first mistook for a midi-length dress topped with a matching white blazer. The full look appears to be a three-piece set comprised of a cropped white tube top, a wide-lapel linen blazer, and white linen culottes that hit a few inches below the knee. The 34-year-old leaned into the minimalism of it all, accessorizing with a sleek gold collar and cream pumps with a curved heel.
Believe it or not, the most surprising element of her ensemble—to this writer, at least—is her bare nails. Low-key nude manicures have been trending for a minute now, but Barbaro’s nails appear truly unvarnished. And that’s a win for women everywhere who have a hard time maintaining a manicure.
Monica Barbaro is currently promoting the second season of Netflix’s Fubar, the action comedy in which she plays the secret agent daughter of Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Luke Brunner. The role may sound like a one-eighty op fans who are more familiar with the actor’s work as Joan Baez in the Bob Dylan biopic A Complete Unknown, but let’s not forget, Barbaro’’s big break was as a pilot in Top Gun: Maverick, a film for which she learned how to fly real supersonic jets. With that in mind, I have to imagine that going head-to-head with Arnold Schwarzenegger is a breeze.
