NY Giants’ Russell Wilson Lands on Alarming NFL List

The New York Giants might have a franchise quarterback waiting in the wings, but for the time being, they have joined a handful of other NFL teams in investing in a one-year rental with Russell Wilson.

Will the bold move pay off? Only time will tell, but it’s easy to see that Wilson is not generating a lot of confidence outside of the Giants’ facility.

Recently, Alex Kay of Bleacher Report predicted five quarterbacks who could be benched during the 2025 NFL season. Wilson, to no surprise, popped up on the list.

The reality for the Giants is that they picked up a quarterback who hasn’t looked so sharp since his playing days with the Seattle Seahawks. After 10 seasons with the Seahawks, Wilson hoped to get a successful fresh start with the Denver Broncos in 2022. His first season in Denver finished with a 4-11 record and a notable regression in his accuracy and TD-INT ratio.

Year two with the Broncos didn’t go much better, as Wilson finished 7-8. The Pittsburgh Steelers attempted to be the home of Wilson’s revival. In 11 games, Wilson threw for 2,482 yards and 16 touchdowns.

The Steelers stint was rocky for the veteran, who battled injuries from the jump. It took seven weeks for Wilson to start a game for Pittsburgh. The Steelers made the playoffs, but they were one-and-done. This year, Pittsburgh will rely on Aaron Rodgers under center instead of the Wilson-Fields combination.

In New York, Wilson will have plenty of eyes on him while two notable passers behind him on the depth chart wait for their opportunity to take over, potentially.

“If the quarterback picks up where he left off in the back half of last season, the coaching staff shouldn’t wait long to yank him and find out what [Jameis] Winston still has left in the tank,” Kay explains, via BR.

For the time being, Russell Wilson has the support of his teammates and coaching staff as the Giants’ starting quarterback for the start of the 2025 NFL season. That won’t erase any pressure, though. Winston is more than capable of coming in and giving the team some quality reps, as he’s appeared in 105 games throughout his career, with seven starts for the Cleveland Browns just last season.

And if all else fails for the veterans, the Giants have every right to trot out their first-round draft selection, Jaxson Dart. After spending a late first on the Ole Miss star, the Giants could get eager to see the youngster in action.
