Miley Cyrus, get behind me.

On June 6, Cyrus was heckled by audience members after the world premiere of her 55-minute visual album, Something Beautiful, at the Tribeca Film Festival. Following the screening, Cyrus took the stage at the Beacon Theater to discuss the film with producer Panos Cosmatos, but that wasn’t good enough for some attendees.

In one TikTok compilation video shared by @mileyeditions, the conversation was disrupted by multiple audience members who believed Cyrus was going to sing live at the event. “We thought this was a concert,” one fan could be heard yelling. “We paid $800.”

Another yelled, “Are you actually gonna sing?” prompting other members of the audience to begin shouting.

Cyrus appeared visibly perturbed by the disturbance but opted to indulge another fan who asked her to perform “The Climb.” Dressed in a (likely very heavy) crystal Schiaparelli dress and fringe robe, Cyrus remained seated while singing a bit from the popular 2009 track before encouraging the crowd to join in.

Though Miley Cyrus later called the experience “emotional, deep, fun & fabulous” in a positive Instagram post, the video elicited a wave of backlash directed at the “impolite” fans in her comments section and other social media platforms.

“Miley Cyrus, your true fans will never be rude to you,” one fan replied to her post. “We knew that the premiere of your movie was just a film screening, not a concert, and we respect your work in different formats. We’ll support you in every project you have, we love YOU.”

Another fan who claimed to be in the audience apologized for the “bad eggs,” adding, “I should have stood up for u but I felt it would have created even more chaos. The true fans LOVED IT AND LOVED THE Q&A! This is a moment in history.”

Over on TikTok, fans had even harsher words for “rude and entitled” fans. “She’s so nice and patient. Those ‘fans’ are soooo rude and entitled. They should be ashamed,” one fan commented, receiving over 3,000 likes. Another wrote, “She’s so nice and patient. Those “fans” are soooo rude and entitled. They should be ashamed.”

“People have no decorum anymore like READ WHAT YOU GOT TICKETS FOR,” another user wrote, receiving 24,000 likes. I’m inclined to agree. While tickets were being sold on Ticketmaster, it should be pretty clear that a “world premiere” at a film festival is not a concert. Even more details were available on the Tribeca Film Festival website, which stated there would be an “exclusive conversation with Miley Cyrus” following the premiere.

In a recent interview with Apple Music’s Zane Lowe, Cyrus revealed part of the reason she no longer tours is to maintain the current sound of her voice, which has been effected Reinke’s edema.

“I have this very large polyp on my vocal cord which is giving me a lot of the tone and the texture that has made me who I am, but it’s extremely difficult to perform with because it’s like running a marathon with ankle weights on,” she said, explaining she doesn’t risk fixing the problem given “the chance of waking up from a surgery and not sounding like myself is a probability.”

Releasing a visual album like Something Beautiful seems to offer fans—dare I say it—best of both worlds.
