ATHENS, Ala. (WHNT) — If you’ve ever been frustrated while driving in Athens due to traffic backups, road conditions, or the actions of other drivers, now is the time to speak up!

The City of Athens has launched an online road safety survey.

They want drivers to pinpoint areas of concern and observe driving behaviors.

City Planner Erin Tidwell told News 19 that the City of Athens is hoping to get at least 1,000 survey responses by the end of June.

“Anyone that works in Athens, that lives in Athens, that travels through Athens, that are using our road networks, we want to make sure that they’re they’re telling us what their user experience is,” Tidwell said.

She said survey responses will be used in the process of crafting an updated transportation safety plan. That plan could include new stop lights, road widening projects, and other “traffic calming” measures.

She said it’s time to update the plan.

“We’re currently working out of our 2015 transportation plan and all of those projects are pretty much completed,” she said. “It’s extremely important as we move forward with growth in Athens is to have an updated plan.”

Since the 2015 transportation plan was crafted, the City of Athens has gained an estimated 8,000 new residents.

Friday afternoon, News 19 spoke with a newer resident, Carole Barron.

She told News 19 that her family has lived in Athens city limits for “about 6 years.” When we asked her if any areas of high traffic or congestion came to mind, she immediately answered, “Lindsay Lane.”

“Lindsay Lane, we think, that’s the busiest street in town,” Barron said.

She said her neighborhood is off of Lindsay Lane and that in times of high traffic, it can be hard to get out of the neighborhood.

“You’re about to have an appointment to get out,” she said.

Barron said her household will be filling out the survey and that they hope the city listens to their concerns.

“I feel that they will [listen],” she said. “I don’t know if they’ll have an immediate solution, but it’s one street that needs addressing.”
