PHOENIX — Arizona Democratic U.S. Rep. Yassamin Ansari released a statement on Friday after the return of a man who was wrongly deported earlier this year.
Kilmar Abrego Garcia, 29, was detained and deported from the U.S. to a Salvadorean prison back in March by the Trump administration.
“Because of the pressure my colleagues and I – and Americans around the country – put on President Trump, Kilmar is back on U.S. soil,” Ansari said in the statement. “Everyone deserves their fair day in court. Now, Mr. Abrego Garcia can have his.”
Details on Yassamin Ansari’s advocating for deported man’s return
Ansari was one of four Democrats who traveled to El Salvador in April to advocate for Abrego Garcia’s release.
The legislator said their efforts paid off after the U.S. embassy reached out to El Salvador President Nayib Bukele.
Abrego Garcia lived in the U.S. for about 14 years after fleeing his native country due to gang threats, according to the Associated Press.
After Abrego Garcia was returned to the country, Ansari said he should have never been deported without due process.
Ansari said she made the trip to hold the Trump administration accountable in upholding a unanimous Supreme Court ruling to return Abrego Garcia to the U.S.
