EXCLUSIVE: Prime Video has been on a true crime doc spree, acquiring a trio of documentaries from Firecrest Films on Shannon Matthews, the Orkney assassin and a Tinder predator.

The Orkney Assassin will drop on Sunday followed later this year by The Hunt for Shannon Matthews and Hunting the Tinder Predator.

The 90-minute feature about the Scottish island group starts in one summer evening in 1994 when a masked man walks calmly into the only Indian restaurant in the remote islands and shoots a waiter dead before disappearing into the night. The murder remained unsolved for years, until new evidence emerged, resulting in an unexpected arrest that stunned the local community.

The Hunt For Shannon Matthews tells the story of one of the most well-known true crime cases in Britain, about a girl who went missing on the way home from school. The documentary explores her disappearance, the police investigation to locate her and the response in her local community and beyond.

Finally, Hunting the Tinder Predator spotlights Christopher Harkins, who last year was sentenced to 12-years for crimes from rape through to fraud after a decade of offending spurred on by online dating. The two-part series explores the actions of Harkins, the attitudes of society and the legal system, and the dogged determination of a band of women who fought to get justice.

We are told the Amazon streamer has bought six Firecrest shows in all, with another three set to be revealed in the coming weeks. Prime Video has been leaning into the true crime space for the past couple of years now and regularly acquires docs.

Of the bulk series order, Firecrest Films’ Iain Scollay said: “We’re delighted to partner again with the brilliant team at Prime Video, and bring such a huge body of premium documentary work to Scotland.”

Execs on the projects are Scollay, Nicole Kleeman and Vari Innes. The series producer is Rachel Heywood
