Summary

  • The Honda Civic Type R is being discontinued in the European market by January 2026 due to new, stricter Euro 6e-bis emissions regulations
  • To mark its departure, Honda is releasing a limited “Ultimate Edition” of only 40 units, featuring cosmetic updates

It’s the end of an era for the beloved Honda Civic Type R. Ahot hatch icon that has thrilled enthusiasts for 28 years, the car is officially being phased out of the European market. This decision, confirmed by Honda, is primarily due to ever-tightening European emissions and regulatory norms, specifically the Euro 6e-bis engine regulations set to take effect from January 2026.

While the current 2025 Honda Civic Type R (FL5 generation) has been widely praised, its emissions of 189g/km of CO2, coupled with a lack of significant electric vehicle offerings in Honda’s European lineup to offset these figures, make it increasingly difficult to comply with the new rules. The same legislation has also led to the culling of other performance cars like the Toyota GR86 and Alpine A110 in the region.

To mark the end of this iconic model’s run in Europe, Honda is releasing a limited “Ultimate Edition” of the Civic Type R. Only 40 units of this special edition will be produced, featuring cosmetic updates like red racing stripes, a black roof, and carbon fiber detailing, along with a celebratory gift box. These final models will be available until July 2026, although demand is expected to be high, and prices are likely to command a premium.

While European enthusiasts mourn the departure of the manual, front-wheel-drive performance car, it’s important to note that the Civic Type R will continue to be sold in other markets, including the U.S. and Japan, without mechanical changes. This means that for some, the thrill of the Type R will live on, but for Europe, it’s a bittersweet farewell to a true automotive legend.
