The romance between Dakota Johnson and Chris Martin has reportedly come to an end. Sources tell People magazine that the actor and the Coldplay musician, who got together in 2017, have parted after almost eight years in an on-again, off-again relationship. “It feels final this time,” one source told the publication. The Fifty Shades of Grey star and the singer were spotted walking in Malibu together just a few weeks ago. In January, they were photographed hand in hand in India during Coldplay’s tour.
Through her relationship with Martin, Johnson also built a beautiful bond with Apple Martin and Moses Martin, the children Martin shares with ex-wife Gwyneth Paltrow. Though she and Martin were not married, Johnson referred to Apple and Moses as her stepchildren in a 2024 interview with Bustle. “I love those kids like my life depends on it. With all my heart,” she said. “I grew up in a family that was so big, and I just believe in the saying ‘Blood is thicker than water.’ The actual saying is ‘The blood of the covenant is thicker than the water of the womb,’ which means that the connections with people you choose are more solid than the connections to the people you’re actually born to.”
Johnson also spoke about her unique blended family in a 2022 Vanity Fair cover story. “Maybe I think about relationships like that differently because I grew up in my family,” she said. “We were all cool. Obviously, there were times where it was not cool, but I experienced that, so I don’t want that in my life. I don’t want any kids to experience anything like that. It’s better to be kind, and it’s also really nice that everybody actually really loves each other and has each other’s backs.”
The Coldplay singer was first spotted with the Fifty Shades of Grey star in October 2017. The following year, the two made their first public appearance together during a fashion show for designer Stella McCartney. In March 2024—after several apparent breakups and reunions—the pair revealed that they were officially engaged.
A few months later, however, there was talk of another estrangement, which the Daily Mail claimed was caused by irreconcilable work schedules. A spokesperson for the actor, however, denied the news, giving assurance that the two were still together and happy. “Their relationship works because they are both very independent and actually have lives outside of their relationship too. It’s like every time they are not spotted together for a while, there are breakup rumors,” a source told People at the time. “Sure, they’ve had issues and taken breaks in the past, but things are great now. They both love their careers. They are balancing things the best they can.”
