What parents need to know about ‘Mayday,’ ‘Onslaught’ and more

Mayday (PG-13)

Age 14+

Cold War buddy action-comedy has violence and language.

This comedic action movie — mostly set in Russia during the Cold War — follows two soldiers (Ryan Reynolds and Kenneth Branagh) from opposing countries who forge a bond despite their cultural differences. The characters find themselves in dangerous scenarios, including bloody fights, chases, stabbings, shootings, explosions and a jet being shot down. The KGB enforces an antigay law and is accused of torturing prisoners, and a tank drives around with a nuclear warhead. A character’s father is dying from mesothelioma. Adults drink alcohol and smoke cigarettes. Language includes “f—,” “s—,” “goddamn,” “hell,” “a–hole” and “b——.” (111 minutes)

Available on Apple TV.

Onslaught (R)

Age 15+

Fierce story about sniper mom is brisk, bloody and empty.

This action film follows a former military sniper (Adria Arjona) as she protects her young daughter from three escaped supersoldiers engineered by an evil scientist (Dan Stevens). There’s lots of gunfire, with many dead bodies and plenty of blood. Violent imagery also includes stabbings, a strangling, a car crash, bodies torn up by a chainsaw and a corpse burned on a barbecue grill. Strong, frequent language includes “f—,” “motherf—er,” “c—,” “s—,” “a–hole,” “b—-,” “b——,” “Jesus Christ” and “damn.” Topless women are seen in a strip club. People smoke cigarettes, a character drives drunk before tossing a bag of beer cans, and someone drinks whiskey and hides empty bottles. A character takes a drug that makes him hallucinate and vomit. (92 minutes)

Available in theaters.

The Runner (PG-13)

Age 14+

Mom races to save her son in tense thriller with peril and blood.

Set in London, this tense psychological thriller centers on a woman (Gal Gadot) whose son is kidnapped and put into an induced coma that will kill him if she doesn’t fulfill certain demands within the hour. Gadot’s character falls, vomits, steals, inflicts harm, and gets hit by a car and knocked out. There are images of bloody crime scenes and descriptions of domestic violence. Viewers also see photos of a woman in lingerie in a private message exploited by a phone hack. Language includes “s—,” “goddamn,” “b—-” and “perv.” (84 minutes)

Available on Prime Video.

Lego Star Wars: The Mandalorian (TV-Y7)

Age 8+

Funny special retells Mando stories with cartoonish violence.

This animated comedy special recaps some choice stories from the live-action Star Wars series “The Mandalorian.” It’s considerably lighter in tone, framed by a birthday party for Mando where his friends show up and regale the captive audience with tales of his adventures. Characters use guns that shoot lasers, and there’s lots of cartoonish fantasy violence (explosions, swordplay, hand-to-hand combat). The villainous Client (voiced by Flula Borg) describes the painful things he had planned for the adorable alien Grogu, and a character appears to sacrifice himself in a fiery river. Characters drink blue juice served from a bar, and there’s light innuendo (such as mention of a “ship-measuring contest”). (49 minutes)

Available on Disney+.
