An MTA bus ran over an elderly man who was crossing a Brooklyn street within the crosswalk Monday, leaving him in critical condition, according to cops and shocking surveillance footage from the scene.
The 87-year-old pedestrian was approaching the middle of the crosswalk on East 12th Street in Sheepshead Bay when a B36 bus, making a left-hand turn from Avenue Z, collided with the victim at approximately 6:40 p.m., according to police and the video.
The victim, whose sneaker was left in the middle of the street in the aftermath, was pinned underneath the bus, according to News 12.
“That bus driver definitely wasn’t looking,” a witness told the local Brooklyn station. “It’s pretty horrific.”
The victim had the right of way, the witness added.
Paramedics rushed the octogenarian to NYU Langone Brooklyn with “trauma to his body,” where he is listed in critical condition, police said.
The bus driver stayed at the scene and waited to talk to officers from the Highway Collision Investigation Squad, who are in charge of the investigation, cops said.
A spokesman for the MTA said it was unclear how long the bus operator had been driving buses for the agency.
The MTA driver was also taken to a local hospital to be treated for emotional trauma after hitting the victim, sources said. As part of MTA protocols, the driver was also administered drug and alcohol tests, according to the sources.
There have been no arrests and the investigation is ongoing.
