Summary

  • Inspired by a custom piece worn by Benicio del Toro in Wes Anderson’s The Phonecian Scheme, eyewear brand Oliver Peoples is releasing 10 Premiere Edition sunglasses inspired by the forthcoming feature.

Los Angeles-based eyewear brand Oliver Peoples has revealed that it designed custom shades for Benicio del Toro’s costumes in Wes Anderson‘s forthcoming feature film, The Phonecian Scheme. In celebration of the official release, Oliver Peoples has produced a limited run of luxury collector’s pairs inspired by the custom piece in the film.

Arriving in ten Premiere Edition pairs, each piece is handcrafted in Italy and comes with custom packaging drawing from the film’s nostalgic aesthetic. On the inspiration, Anderson said, “I had the image of Benicio playing a Euro business tycoon, like somebody in an Antonioni movie. I could just see him in it; I could see him and his sunglasses,” according to an Instagram post from the brand.

Recently premiered at Cannes Film Festival and slated to hit select theaters this Friday, stills from the movie show the legendary del Toro sporting the elegant vintage-style, characterized by tortoise-hued frames and a tapered silhouette. In addition to replicating details like the gold-hued rivets at the edges of the frame, the sculptural temple shows a metallic numbered Premiere Edition on the inner side.

The Phoenician Scheme follows Zsa-Zsa Korda, del Toro’s character, as he faces the challenge of rescuing his business and reconnecting with his daughter, played by Mia Threapleton. Other cast members include Scarlet Johansson, Tom Hanks, Michael Cera, Riz Ahmed, F. Murray Abraham, Benedict Cumberbatch, and Bill Murray. After arriving at select theaters this Friday, The Phonecian Scheme will be in theaters everywhere on June 6.

Interested buyers should inquire with their local Oliver Peoples boutique. See the trailer for The Phonecian Scheme below.
