The 2025 NFL season has started to kick off, and while teams will begin to perfect their 53-man rosters, there are still chances at blockbuster trades. In fact, the Miami Dolphins and Pittsburgh Steelers are reportedly engaged in talks for a Pro Bowl talent.

According to NFL insider, Adam Schefter, the Dolphins have had trade discussions with the Steelers regarding Jonnu Smith.

The post reads:

“The Dolphins have had trade discussions with the Pittsburgh Steelers about their lone Pro-Bowl selection last season, tight end Jonnu Smith, per league sources. Those talks came after Smith expressed an interest in reworking his deal that is scheduled to pay him $4.8 million this season. With Smith seeking a new contract, Miami has sought a trade partner. Last season, Smith set the franchise record for a tight end in receptions, receiving yards and touchdowns. Smith’s preference, per sources, is to stay in Miami under a reworked deal.”

This is a huge development considering Smith was the lone Pro Bowler that the Dolphins had in 2024. He secured 88 receptions for 884 yards and eight touchdowns, with the receptions setting a new franchise record.

Smith became one of the better offensive weapons that the Dolphins had. In terms of receiving yards, Smith only trailed Tyreek Hill, who secured 959.

Smith’s eight touchdowns were also the most among receivers. He proved in 2024 that he is a viable pass catcher and blocker. It is strange that the Dolphins are not wanting to award him a reworked deal.

According to the report from Schefter, Smith also prefers to remain in Miami, but has asked for a new deal. He is set to make $4.8 million this season, but the tight end could be looking for more guaranteed money.

The usual case for reworked deals is players wanting to ensure they have a guaranteed amount of money to be paid in case of injury. Smith has been one of the most durable players in the NFL, playing in all 17 games the past two seasons.

Miami should play ball with Smith and figure out the contract issue, as they only have Julian Hill, Pharaoh Brown, and Tanner Conner on the roster right now.

The Dolphins are going to look far different in 2025, but if they choose to trade Smith to the Steelers, they will be without one of their most important offensive weapons.
