Veterans across the U.S. will be receiving their monthly disability compensation payment this week.

Why It Matters

Approximately 6.2 million Veterans in the U.S. receive disability benefits through the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). These tax-free monthly payments are provided to individuals with disabilities linked to illnesses, injuries, or events that occurred or were aggravated during active military service.

The program also extends financial support to surviving spouses, dependent children, and parents, offering monthly compensation to help offset the economic impact of a service member’s death—whether it occurred during military service or as a result of a service-connected disability after discharge.

What To Know

VA benefits are paid on a monthly basis. This week, disability beneficiaries will be paid on Friday, May 30, according to Veteran’s Guide.

How Much Can I Get?

The amount you receive in disability compensation depends on your disability rating and whether you have dependents, such as children or parents.

Disability ratings are assigned based on the severity of your condition and are expressed in percentages—10 percent, 20 percent, and so on. The higher your rating, the greater your monthly benefit. If you have more than one service-connected condition, the VA combines them to determine your overall rating.

All disability levels qualify for basic compensation. A 10 percent disability rating provides a basic payment of $175.51 per month, while a 20 percent rating offers $346.95.

For ratings above 20 percent, your monthly payment also takes into account your family situation—such as whether you’re married or have children. As an example, a veteran with a 50 percent disability rating and a spouse, but no dependent parents, would receive $1,208.04 per month.

The maximum basic amount available to veterans is $4,544.23, paid only to those with one child, a spouse and two parents. Extra amounts are available for veterans who may have additional dependents, such as more than two children.

Benefit Payment Dates For 2025

For the rest of the year, disability payments will be made on the following dates.

  • June: Tuesday, July 1
  • July: Friday, August 1
  • August: Friday, August 29
  • September: Wednesday, October 1
  • October: Friday, October 31
  • November: Monday, December 1
  • December: Wednesday, December 31

What Happens Next

The VA recently announced it has reduced the backlog of applications for disability benefits to below 200,000 for the first time since March 2023.

A claim is considered backlogged if it has been pending for more than 125 days. Since President Donald Trump‘s inauguration on January 20, the backlog has decreased by 25 percent, from 264,717 to 198,378.

VA Secretary Doug Collins, said that “under President Trump, VA’s claims processing productivity is the highest it has ever been, and we will continue working overtime on behalf of Veterans until the backlog is at record lows.”
