Social Security payments are due to be made this week to millions of Americans.
Why It Matters
The Social Security Administration (SSA) pays out retirement, survivor and disability benefits to more than 70 million Americans every month. Because of the huge number of recipients, not every claimant gets their money on the same date each month, with recipients being paid according to their date of birth and what type of benefit they receive.
What To Know
This week, two rounds of Social Security payments will be made.
The first will be made on Wednesday, May 28, and will go out to those who receive retirement, spousal and survivor benefits who were born between the 21st and 31st of any calendar month.
The second payment will be for Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipients, who will get their monthly check slightly earlier than usual on Friday, May 30. SSI payments are usually made on the first day of the month.
“When the first day of the month falls on the weekend or a federal holiday, you receive your SSI payment on the last business day before the first day of the month,” the SSA said in a 2022 blog post. “That means you may get two SSI payments in the same month.”
“We do this to avoid putting you at a financial disadvantage and make sure that you don’t have to wait beyond the first of the month to get your payment. It does not mean that you are receiving a duplicate payment in the previous month, so you do not need to contact us to report the second payment.”
Anyone who hasn’t received their payment on the expected date should allow three working days before contacting the SSA. Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays are not working days.
How Much Is Social Security?
As of January 2025, the average Social Security retirement benefit is $1,976 per month.
Maximum benefits vary: if you opt to retire and claim at 62, you can get a maximum of $2,831; $4,018 at full retirement age (67), and $5,108 at age 70.
For SSI, the 2025 maximum is $967 for individuals and $1,450 for couples. However, payments may be lower than this as they are based on income, living situation, and other eligibility factors.
What Happens Next
In June, benefits will be paid on the following dates:
- Tuesday, June 3: Retirement benefits for those who have been collecting checks since before May 1997 and retirees who also collect SSI benefits.
- Wednesday, June 11: Retirement, spousal and survivor benefits for those born between the first and 10th of any calendar month.
- Wednesday, June 18: Benefits for those born between the 11th and 20th.
