Formerly known as Decoration Day, the origins of the U.S. holiday stem back to the post-Civil War era, when the Grand Army of the Republic, a group of Union army veterans, called for a day to remember the lives of those who died defending their country.
The name change was officially recognized by the federal government in 1967.
The Civil War concluded in the spring of 1865 and was the deadliest conflict in U.S. history, with an estimated 620,000 men, or roughly 2 percent of the general population at the time, losing their lives in battle.

“That said, Memorial Day has been in the top six biggest Monday sales for U.S. Goodwill in-store sales during the past four years (2021-2024), and last year, Memorial Day was the fourth biggest Monday sales for U.S. Goodwill in-store sales.”
