Berkeley | $799,000

A 1928 bungalow, on 0.05 acres

This two-bedroom, two-bathroom house is a few blocks from Shattuck Avenue, and within a 10-minute walk of coffee shops, a delicatessen, a cheese shop and restaurants that serve Thai, Indian and Japanese cuisines. The chef Alice Waters’s farm-to-table restaurant, Chez Panisse, is also within walking distance, as are a grocery store and several specialty food markets. Live Oak Park, home to walking paths and a playground, is five minutes away on foot.

The Downtown Berkeley BART station is a mile away, and San Francisco is 40 minutes away via public transit. The campus of the University of California, Berkeley, is 15 minutes away by bus, and driving to Mount Diablo State Park takes an hour and 15 minutes.

Size: 1,196 square feet

Price per square foot: $668

Indoors: From the sidewalk, steps lead to a red front door. Inside, hardwood floors continue from the foyer into the living room, where a picture window looks out at the street below and original built-in shelves flank a fireplace

On the other side of a wide doorway is a formal dining room, and past this space is the kitchen, which has a garden window above the sink and appliances that include a dishwasher and a range with a gas cooktop.

A hallway off the kitchen links both bedrooms. The front bedroom is big enough for a queen-size bed and a desk, and up a short set of steps at the back of the hall is the second bedroom, with windows that face a rear deck. There are two bathrooms off the main hall, one with a claw-foot soaking tub, and the other with a shower. The walkout basement has a washer and dryer, a sink and additional storage space.

Outdoor space: From the stone patio outside, steps lead up to the deck, which is enclosed by a wood railing and big enough for an outdoor dining set. A garage, attached at the front of the house, holds one car.

Taxes: $9,984 (estimated)

Atascadero | $799,000

A house built in 2015, on 1.7 acres

This two-bedroom, two-bathroom house is five minutes by car from the center of Atascadero. A small museum, a public park and a movie theater are nearby, and public elementary, middle, and high schools are all within a five-minute drive. This part of the state is a hub for winemaking, and a number of wineries are within 20 minutes by car, as is the town of Paso Robles, a popular destination for wine tasting.

Driving to the beaches of Morro Bay takes less than half an hour, and San Simeon, home to Hearst Castle, is 45 minutes away. Santa Barbara and Fresno are each around two hours away.

Size: 1,620 square feet

Price per square foot: $493

Indoors: A long driveway leads from the street to the front entry, which opens directly to a living room that has a fireplace with a raised hearth. Tall, south-facing windows along the far wall overlook nearby hillsides.

The living room is brightened by more windows and tucked into one side is a dining area with a built-in bench seat. The kitchen, open to the living room, has a center island and cabinets painted green. The appliances are stainless steel, and open shelving lines the walls. A pantry with more storage space is off the kitchen.

Both bedrooms are off a hallway that extends from the kitchen, with the primary suite at the far end. Sliding-glass doors open from the bedroom to a patio, and the en suite bathroom has a long double vanity and a walk-in shower, plus a stacked washer and dryer. Next door, a guest bedroom has outdoor access to a small wood deck. A bathroom off the hall has a walk-in shower.

Outdoor space: A deck runs along the back of the house, with space for separate dining and sitting areas, and views of the landscape. On a flat section of the lot, adjacent to the main house, there are several raised garden boxes and a detached studio space with its own bathroom and deck. The driveway has parking for several cars.

Taxes: $9,984 (estimated)

A contemporary home built in 1979 and recently updated, on 2.3 acres

This three-bedroom, three-bathroom house, which was most recently used as a short-term rental property, is 10 minutes by car from the Joshua Tree Visitor Center and 15 minutes by car from the entrance of Joshua Tree National Park. A section of the park close to the house includes the Barker Dam trail, which passes a small reservoir. A coffee shop, a saloon and a big-box retail center along Highway 62 are all within a 15-minute drive.

Pioneertown, a popular filming location with Old West-inspired buildings, is 25 minutes away. Palm Springs is an hour away.

Size: 2,335 square feet

Price per square foot: $341

Indoors: This home’s front door is at the center of a long porch. Inside, the living room has high, wood-paneled ceilings and a wood-burning fireplace with a brick surround that’s painted white. The dining area, on one side of the living room, has a hanging rattan light fixture and a window that looks out at the porch.

The kitchen has sliding-glass doors opening to the backyard. The center island holds four bar stools, and the range has an electric cooktop.

Between the living area and the kitchen, a long hallway leads to the bedroom wing, where all three bedrooms have en suite bathrooms. The primary suite’s sleeping area, big enough for a king-size bed, also holds a soaking tub set before a backyard-facing window.

One of the other two bedrooms has a sleeping area and a sitting area, and its attached bathroom has a vanity with a basin-style sink. The other bedroom is big enough for a queen-size bed, and its bathroom has a walk-in shower partially enclosed by a glass wall.

Outdoor space: The fenced backyard has several trees and a fire pit. Set into one corner is a wood sun deck with a hot tub and a stock tank pool, plus space for a set of lounge chairs. A detached garage has room for two cars.
