HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) — One of Huntsville’s long-standing traditions returns Monday.

The 45th annual Cotton Row Run will happen in downtown Huntsville starting at 7 a.m.

Since 1980, runners have gathered at the starting line early on Memorial Day beneath the living memorial flag, hoisted by one of Huntsville Fire & Rescue’s engines. That flag commemorates Fallen Warriors whose families live in North Alabama.

“A lot of the proceeds from the race they go to support families of the fallen soldiers,” Moeller said. “As a matter of fact, the bibs that we wear during the race will all have a sticker of a local fallen soldier to commemorate them’

The race, organized by the Huntsville Track Club, features a 10k, 5k runs and the 1-mile fun run. Race director Paul Moeller said the race has something for everyone.

“It’s such a fun run for the community,” Moeller said. “We get to bring together runners of all different types of abilities, and they get to challenge themselves.”

Despite some weather in the forecast, the race will go on rain or shine.

‘We’ll monitor the weather very closely, so don’t be afraid. We have shelter all around the park in case we need to take shelter,” Moeller said. “We will make the decision to go on with city officials if it’s really severe weather, but if it’s raining, we are going.”

With around 3,500 runners expected to participate in the race, the Huntsville Police Department said they are asking people to use caution and expect a few delays.

HPD said northbound Church Street will be closed from Williams Avenue, and southbound lanes will be closed at the parking garage across from the YMCA and the Huntsville Utilities building on Church Street.

The department will briefly stop traffic as runners go by.
