DECATUR, Ala. (WHNT) – Decatur City Council President Jacob Ladner announced on Friday that he will not seek reelection in August.
Ladner has represented District 5 for the last five years. In his announcement, he highlighted several accomplishments the city has made over his time on the council.
Among those, he listed the transformation of Wilson Morgan Park and its $52 million Recreation Center, revitalized Farmers Market and the Ingalls Harbor development.
Ladner said that, probably, the most significant change has been the renewed focus on residential development that has led to more housing growth.
“People are choosing to make Decatur home — an encouraging sign of the city’s momentum,” he said.
Several projects are still underway, according to the councilman, including drainage improvements at Princeton Place, the widening of Modaus Road and Bunny Lane and the “long-anticipated” third bridge over the Tennessee River.
Over the past two years, we’ve faced painful and difficult moments. These challenges tested us all—elected officials, city employees, and citizens. I know not everyone agreed with my decisions, and I’ve certainly made mistakes. I always did what I believed was right. I’m confident we’ll emerge from these challenges stronger than before.

Ladner said that he will serve the final five months of his term and help to move several initiatives forward in that time, saying that “many exciting things are to come.”
“Thank you again for the opportunity to serve. I’ll always be proud to call Decatur home—and grateful for the chance to play a small part in its continued success.”
