DEKALB COUNTY, Ala. (WHNT) — A DeKalb County man was found with a fatal gunshot wound after an explosion took place at a home on Thursday.

The DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office received a call around 1:30 a.m. about an explosion that happened at a home in the 4500 block of Highway 75 near the Painter Community.

Upon arrival, authorities found James Arnold Wilson, 63, of Crossville, dead as a result of a gunshot wound. According to the Sheriff’s Department, the home was also found on fire.

DCSO said that fire crews began battling the house fire. Shortly after, deputies secured the scene until a DeKalb County Criminal Investigations Unit responded.

After the fire was put out, Investigators continued to process the scene and interview witnesses.

Authorities told News 19 that the fire was determined to be a result of an intentional explosion and that Wilson died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Jacksonville State Center for Applied Forensics, Geraldine Police Department, Geraldine, Crossville, Fyffe, and Collinsville Police Departments responded. Geraldine, Crossville, Kilpatrick, and Grove Oak Fire Departments also responded to the scene.

“We pray that the Lord be with this family as they mourn the loss of their loved one, comfort them with your love and the peace only you can give.

We would like to thank all first responders with DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office, Geraldine, Crossville, Fyffe and Collinsville Police Department’s, Geraldine, Crossville, Kilpatrick and Grove Oak Fire Department’s, and DeKalb Ambulance Service. God Bless!”

DeKalb County Sheriff Nick Welden
