Michael Block and Blades Brown got off to a good start at the Charles Schwab Challenge, carding a 2-under 68 in the first round. But the highlight of the day for both was probably finishing tied with World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler.

The three-time major winner started the day with eagle-birdie on his first two holes, suggesting that he could go very low. However, the rest of the round was rather quiet, adding only one birdie and two bogeys to his scorecard.

“It was a challenging day,” Scheffler said after the round. “I didn’t hit the ball in the fairway a lot. Around this golf course you have to be in the fairway. I did a good job of posting a score, and hopefully I get out tomorrow in some softer conditions and take advantage of that.”

“On a day where I didn’t hit a lot of fairways on a golf course where you have to hit a lot of fairways, I posted a decent score. Anything under par around here in these conditions isn’t a bad score.”

Block, on the other hand, had some ups and downs on Thursday, carding three birdies and three bogeys in his first 11 holes. But he was able to find a better pace for the rest of the round, adding two birdies without a bogey to finish at 2-under.

In Brown’s case, his round was one on the front nine and one on the back nine. He opened with three birdies and a bogey on the first nine, then carded nine consecutive pars for the rest of the round.

Another 20 players are tied at 2-under with Scheffler, Block and Brown. Lucas Glover (26th) and Robert MacIntyre (52nd), who are currently in the top 55 on the FedEx Cup rankings, stand out.

PGA Tour rookie John Pak leads the Charles Schwab Challenge at 7-under par, three strokes off nine players who are tied for second. Pak carded a bogey-free round with one eagle and five birdies.

Earlier in the day, Joel Dahmen aced the 13th hole for the first hole-in-one of his PGA Tour career.
