PHOENIX — Stage 2 fire restrictions are set to begin Friday by state and federal officials in central and western Arizona.

Authorities enacted the restrictions in state and federal lands due to increased wildfire activity and dry conditions.

The news comes after stage 2 fire restrictions were implemented on May 13 in southeastern Arizona.

Restrictions were implemented in the following state land counties:

  • Gila
  • La Paz
  • Maricopa
  • Mohave
  • Pinal
  • Pima
  • Yavapai
  • Yuma.

Additional restrictions were also implemented in counties managed by the Bureau of Land Management, including:

  • La Paz
  • Maricopa
  • Southern Mohave
  • Northern Pinal
  • Western Pima
  • Yavapai
  • Yuma.

What activities are prohibited due to Stage 2 fire restrictions?

Visitors in the area are not allowed to build a campfire using charcoal, coal or a wood stove except within a recreational site.

Smoking is prohibited in all areas except within an enclosed vehicle or building.

Using devices such as chainsaws or other tools with a internal combustion engine is also prohibited.

Fireworks and exploding targets are always banned on state or federal lands.

What activities are allowed under the new restrictions?

Using devices such as liquid or gas stoves, lanterns and heaters that have shut-off devices is allowed. Authorities advise visitors to make sure the area is clear of grass and vegetation and that stoves are on a stable surface when in use.

Visitors who violate these restrictions are subject to fines, imprisonment or both.
