The San Antonio Spurs are coming off a season that saw them depleted by injuries. The Spurs were on the verge of possibly competing for a top-10 spot in the loaded Western Conference and had a legitimate chance at securing a playoff spot.

However, the injury of their superstar center, Victor Wembanyama, caused them to tank the season, and it paid off. The Spurs landed with the No. 2 overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft after having a 6 percent chance of winning the lottery.
Instead, they landed with the No. 2 pick, which is still a high pick and one they could use as a trade piece to land a mega supertar this summer. Not only does the No. 2 pick help, but they have the assets to trade for a superstar, like Giannis Antetokounmpo.
Since they’ve won the No. 2 pick, the Spurs have been linked to Antetokounmpo in trade rumors.
The Spurs’ potential acquisition of Antetokounmpo would certainly propel them to the top of the West and make them immediate title contenders. A trade of the two-time MVP would immediately accelerate the Spurs’ title line, as Antetokounmpo will turn 31 in December.
While any team would be lucky to acquire him, the Spurs may be more resistant to trading their top pick for the former Defensive Player of the Year. Adam Wells of Bleacher Report shared.
“Given the difficulties some teams have had navigating with expensive rosters in the second-apron era, muddying up the salary cap with three max players at the same time may not be something the Spurs are eager to do,” wrote Wells.
The Spurs have a chance to trade for him, and they are one of the few teams that could offer an enticing package; however, it may not be the right move financially.
The Spurs are already paying a lot for De’Aaron Fox and will eventually pay Wembanyama a five-year, $271 million extension, which he will be eligible for next summer.
Antetokounmpo is on track to make $54.1 million next season, while Fox is slated to earn $34.8 million. While the Spurs could potentially put together a compelling trade package for Antetokounmpo, that doesn’t necessarily mean they’re all-in on pursuing him—especially if the long-term impact isn’t as significant as it might appear on paper.
