EXCLUSIVE: Harley Chamandy has signed with Buchwald for representation.
The Canadian filmmaker made his debut feature, Allen Sunshine, executive produced by Academy Award-winning Anora-producer, Alex Coco, won the Werner Herzog Film prize at the Munich Film Festival in December 2024. While previous winners of the award include Chloe Zhao and Asghar Farhadi, Chamandy is the youngest winner in history, receiving this accolade at just 22 years old. Shot on 16mm celluloid, the film follows protagonist Allen, an ex-music producer who moves to the remote woods to isolate and mourn the tragic death of his pop vocalist wife.
At the festival in Germany, Herzog congratulated Chamandy before their Q&A, “One of the foundation’s tasks is to promote young talent, and it is remarkable that Harley Chamandy took part in my first workshop for young filmmakers in Cuba when he was just 17 years old. At the age of 21, he made his subtle film, which has been awarded here.” Herzog said.
“The criteria for the award from my foundation are always innovation, courage, and initiative, and Harley Chamandy has demonstrated all of these. He already possesses a unique voice. Congratulations to him.“ Herzog added.
Allen Sunshine was also featured in The Film Stage’s list of the best debut films of 2024 and took home the top prize at the Karlovy Vary Film Festival in the Czech Republic. The film is currently being shopped for distribution.
Chamandy currently has several projects in development to be announced at a future date.
