Bartlett, N.H. | $499,000

A chalet-style house built in 1977, on 0.8 acres

This three-bedroom, one-and-a-half-bathroom house is in a neighborhood of Alpine-inspired homes within a 20-minute drive of hiking, skiing and camping at the edge of White Mountain National Forest. Though popular for vacations, Bartlett has a number of year-round residents. Within a 10-minute drive of the house are several pubs, a pizza parlor, an Italian restaurant and market, and a bakery. North Conway, N.H., 20-minutes away by car, is home to outlets and big-box stores.

Concord, N.H., is a two-hour drive away, and Portland, Maine, is about the same. Driving to Boston takes less than three hours.

Size: 1,152 square feet

Price per square foot: $433

Indoors: At the top of a long driveway, wood steps lead to a bright red front door.

Inside, a foyer connects all three bedrooms and stairs continue to the main level. This part of the house has high, wood-paneled ceilings and windows that look out to treetops. A fireplace set into the center of the room is painted green, and two sets of sliding-glass doors open to a balcony.

The sitting and dining areas are open to the kitchen, which has a hanging rattan light fixture. The appliances, including an induction range, are stainless steel, and cabinets and open shelving line the walls. A powder room is off the kitchen, with walls covered in butter-yellow tile.

The primary bedroom is at the front of the first floor, directly off the foyer. The room fits a queen-size bed and has a window facing the front yard. The bedroom next door also has space for a queen-size bed. A smaller bedroom, across the hall, has a backyard-facing window and wood paneling painted white. It fits a twin-size bed. The bathroom on this level has a combined tub and shower and blue tile accents. A closet and a laundry room are also off the foyer.

Outdoor space: The balcony is big enough for a couple of chairs and a small table, and its wood railing has Alpine-style spindles. The front yard is landscaped with grass, and there are mature trees out back. The driveway has parking for several cars.

Taxes: $2,079 (estimated), plus a $98 monthly homeowner’s association fee

Royal Oak, Mich. | $499,000

A unit in a 2019 condominium building

This two-bedroom, two-bathroom unit is in the center of Royal Oak, less than a half-hour drive from downtown Detroit. Main Street, where entertainment includes a movie theater and a comedy club, is 15 minutes away on foot. Nearby dining includes a Greek street food spot, a farm-to-table restaurant and a ramen place with a rooftop cocktail bar. A farmer’s market is within walking distance.

Royal Oak has an Amtrak station, 10 minutes from the building on foot, and beaches on Lake Erie are within an hour’s drive. Chicago and Toronto are less than five hours away by car.

Size: 1,400 square feet

Price per square foot: $356

Indoors: An elevator from the building’s lobby goes directly to this unit, opening to the center of the main living area. To one side of the elevator is the combined sitting and dining area, which has coffered ceilings and wide-plank oak floors. Windows line the walls, and a door on one side of the space opens to a small balcony.

On the other side of the elevator is an open kitchen, which has a center island with a stainless steel sink and a dishwasher. Pendant lights hang above, and a stainless steel gas range is set beneath a gray tile backsplash. The countertops are Caesarstone and the cabinets are custom-made.

From the kitchen, a hallway leads to the bedroom wing, with a primary suite at the far end. Big enough for a king-size bed, it has two large windows and a double-door closet. The attached bathroom has a walk-in shower and an accent wall made using novelty-print wallpaper.

The second bedroom is also off the hallway, with its own closet and space for a queen-size bed. A second full bathroom is across the hall, and a stacked washer and dryer are in a closet off the foyer.

Outdoor space: The unit has an extra room off the building’s lobby, which could be used as a home office or as a workout space, and one assigned parking spot.

Taxes: $9,444 (estimated), plus a $410 monthly homeowner’s association fee

A 1939 brick house, on 0.2 acres

This house has four bedrooms, one full and two half-bathrooms, and recent updates, including a new three-zone, mini-split system and a backyard patio with a wood sauna. The house is a few blocks from Lake Hiawatha Park, which has a golf course, tennis courts and walking trails that wind around the lake. A stretch of E. 38th Street, 15 minutes away on foot, is home to a wine bar, a comic book store and a butcher shop.

The Minneapolis Institute of Art is a 15-minute drive, as is the campus of the University of Minnesota Twin Cities. Downtown Saint Paul is 25 minutes away and Minnesota-St. Paul International Airport is a 10-minute drive.

Size: 2,094 square feet

Price per square foot: $239

Indoors: A paved path leads from the sidewalk up to the home’s front door, which opens to the foyer. Original fir floors continue into the sunny living room, where a fireplace has a new gas insert and a bay window faces the front yard.

The dining room, through a wide doorway, has two built-in china cabinets and two six-over-six windows. The kitchen is on the other side of the dining room, with butcher block counters and stainless steel appliances.

A hallway off the dining room connects the primary bedroom, at the back of the house, to another bedroom and a full bathroom. The primary bedroom has windows that face the enclosed sunroom, and both of the bedrooms are big enough for queen-size beds. The bathroom has a combined tub and shower, and the pink and black tiles are original.

Two more bedrooms are upstairs. Each could hold a double bed and a desk, and they share a half bathroom. The basement has a den, a half bathroom and a separate space used as a combined office and music room.

Outdoor space: A brick patio contains an outdoor dining setup and a second patio is next to the wood sauna. The backyard has several mature trees and a swing set, and a detached three-car garage includes a workshop area.
