I don’t know about you, but now that the world’s longest winter has finally melted into spring, I could use a vacation. And while my bank account might say LOL to that idea, my Hulu subscription says ‘pack your bags, babe’ — because there’s a new psychosocial drama-filled luxury resort in town.
That’s right: Hulu’s smash hit Nine Perfect Strangers is back for season two on May 21, introducing a brand-new cast of characters desperately seeking catharsis from Nicole Kidman’s unorthodox wellness guru Masha Dmitrichenko. But while the first season was based on the plot of the bestselling novel, season two branches off from the source material and goes into uncharted territory, beginning with a major change of scenery.
When the new season starts, Masha has left sunny California, chopped her bohemian waves into a sharp bob, and set up shop in the stunning, snow-covered Alps of Germany (Zauberwald, the name of Season 2’s retreat, literally means “enchanted forest,” so fans can expect some trips through the woods, Alice-in-Wonderland style.)
Of course, what makes the show so addictive isn’t just the all-star casting, gorgeous vistas, and experimental therapies; the characters all harbor secrets and complicated pasts that add a thrilling layer of suspense to their search for truth and transcendence. Nine Perfect Strangers is first and foremost a seductive mystery full of shocking surprises, but it’s also a deeply human (and darkly hilarious) exploration of trauma and healing. In a fun twist this season — no spoilers, don’t worry — the new strangers’ lives are all intertwined, and they’ll have to untangle the threads in order to identify an unexpected villain hiding among them. Some of the nine will get the closure they seek — while others might not leave Zauberwald alive.
