On Monday, Denzel Washington took a quick, emotional trip to the Cannes Film Festival. The 70-year-old Oscar winner walked the Cannes red carpet for Spike Lee ‘s latest film, Highest 2 Lowest, in which Washington co-stars with A$AP Rocky. The trio posed together, much to the delight of photographers—who didn’t hesitate to show their excitement, even if it meant being unprofessional.

As Denzel Washington stood by A$AP Rocky, a photographer on the red carpet grabbed his arm to get his attention—a gesture the actor didn’t appreciate at all. He shared his displeasure by pointing his finger at the culprit, asking him to stop and not repeat what he had just done. But the photographer repeated his gesture, prompting Washington to push his arm away impetuously. “Stop it! Stop it!” the actor said in response.

Washington’s evening seemed to improve as the premiere got underway, and he received a nice surprise: an honorary Palme d’Or. The award was presented by Spike Lee, who has directed Washington in films including Mo’ Better Blues and Malcom X. Prior to Highest 2 Lowest, their sixth film together, the friends had not collaborated for some twenty years—amplifying the emotion at the Cannes festival. “Thank you, thank you, thank you,” Washington said as he received his honor. “It’s a total surprise for me, so I’m a bit emotional, but thank you all from the bottom of my heart. It was a wonderful opportunity to collaborate again with my brother—a brother from another mother, Spike.”

Highest 2 Lowest, which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival, is a reinterpretation of the crime thriller High and Low by Japanese filmmaker Akira Kurosawa, released in 1963. Spike Lee’s film is set in New York, and focuses on a music tycoon (Washington), the victim of a ransom attempt, as he faces a moral dilemma between life and death.
