PGA Championship: Sergio Garcia Has Shocking Ryder Cup Admission

LIV Golf star Sergio Garcia has repeatedly expressed his interest in returning to the Ryder Cup next September. However, it is clear that this interest has not erased his ability to self-evaluate, and his latest statements prove it.

The 2017 Masters winner stunned the golf world with shocking comments about his chances of making the European team:

“Obviously the way I’m playing, even if Luke [Donald] offered me a pick right now, I would tell him no,” Garcia said, after finishing his performance in the PGA Championship.

Not many players would say no to being picked for the Ryder Cup team, a decision that rests entirely with the captain. However, Garcia feels that this should not be the case with the current state of his game:

“Obviously, I need to get better,” he said. “I need to get more where I was just before the Masters. You know, just show myself and show everyone that my game is solid, and it can help the Team Europe.”

“It’s as simple as that. The good thing is that there’s still, you know, two or three months until the team is finalized. So you know, I’ll have time to gain some confidence and improve a little bit on my game.”

The European team for the Ryder Cup is selected using a points system to rank the players. The top six players in the rankings qualify directly for the team, while the other six members are picked by the captain.

Garcia has virtually no chance of finishing the season in the top six, so he must be picked to be able to play at Bethpage Black in September.

The Spaniard finished the 2024 season very well with five top 20s in his last five LIV Golf events, including one win and two top 10s. He also finished in the top 15 at the U.S. Open.

He started 2025 with the same trend, a win and two top 10s in the first five LIV events of the season, but then his results dropped off. Since April, he has missed the cut at the Masters, finished outside the top 40 in two Saudi-backed league events and just finished T67 at the PGA Championship.

At Quail Hollow, Garcia started with a terrible 75 in the first round, but bounced back with a 68 on Friday to make the cut on the number (1-over). On the so-called “Moving Day” he shot another very poor score (79) and closed with a 69 on Sunday.

Sergio Garcia is a true European Ryder Cup legend. He has won six times in 10 appearances and holds the event’s all-time scoring record with 28.5 points.

But as he said himself, he needs to find his best game again.
